Let’s try Clicker Training!

Hey everybody! So I didn’t blog the last few days but I was schooling up and information together for this post! Then of course before making the post I had to try everything I’ve learnt so far.

So I have decided to try something new with Leena. We are going to adventure into clicker training! I am so excited to try this with her. I want to do clicker training as well as target training. I’ve become a bit of a podcast junkie and I have 3 on the go that touch base on clicker training and also positive reinforcement training. I will post the links at the bottom of this post!

Items you will need to get started with Clicker & Target training.

A clicker as shown above I purchased these two on Amazon for around $10.00 CAD
Some sort of target – can be a tennis ball on a stick or a pool noodle, water bottle, really anything that your horse can target his/her face to.
Treats! – I am using a combination of Timothy alfalfa pellets and Cool Crunch treats by Pegasus. Those are for the big attempts or big accomplishments.
Patience – please remember to be patient with your horse, they will have no clue what you are asking nor will they have any idea as to what the sound of the clicker is.

The idea of clicker training is that you use the click as a reward for behaviour you want. You support that click with treats, it allows your horse to know that “you did a good job, treats are coming.” It allows you time to grab treats and reward for good behaviour. I will share a link below for one of my favourite trainers that does clicker training and positive reinforcement. I could explain it all but there are many amazing professionals that explain everything much better then I could!
